Austerity makes Panda Bears lazy (cute video)

Chinese scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology in Beijing radio collared six pandas (3 male, 3 female) in the Qinling Mountains of China. After six years of observation they found that pandas consume only 38% of energy needed for other similar animals – just 5.2 megajoules (MJ) instead of 13.8 MJ. This means that a 90=kg panda needs less than half energy than a human with the same weight.

The way they managed to achieve their low metbolism is through a “suite of morphological, behavioral, physiological and genetic adaptations during their ong evolutionary history.”

Low mobility is the only way they manage to save energy with their lazy lifestyle allowing them to trick to slow metabolism.
