Huge fire in the Peloponnese, with villages evacuated
A wildfire broke out at 3.50 a.m. on Friday at Neapoli, Lakonia, the picturesque harbor town near the Peloponnese. Monemvasia’s Vice Mayor of Civil Protection called for the villages of Faraklo and Lahi, though he said that no houses had been harmed by the fire.
Monemvasia Mayor Herakles Trihilis said that the wildfire had entered villages. 55 firemen with 20 firetrucks are in the area. Alongside the fire brigade is a civil group of 14 people and four trucks of the area’s municipality. Two aircraft are at the assistance of firefighters.
Strong winds are fueling the fire. Its origins are still unknown.
