Attack on Police Station Leaves Two Turkish Officers, Two PKK Militants Dead
An armed attack on a police station in the southern Turkish province of Adana left two police officers and two Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants dead.
Around eight PKK militants armed with long-barreled guns attacked the police station in the town of Pozanti early on Friday.
This resulted in an armed conflict as police officers responded to the fire, Hurriyet Daily informs.
The murdered police officers were identified as Isa Ipek and Serdar Kazar.
Two of the PKK militants were killed as they reportedly entered the building.
Adana Governor Mustafa Buyuk said that the killed militants had previously been sought for being members of the banned organisation.
Two Kalashnikov rifles, one gun, four hand grenades and a bomb set-up were seized from the bodies of the dead militants.
As the remaining militants fled the scene, security forces have launched a wide-scale operation in the region to uncover them.
This has been the latest in a series of attacks against Turkish security forces launched by militants, which have resulted in the death of several policemen and military officers.
There has been a surge in violence after the suicide attack in the southeastern town of Suruc on July 20, which claimed the lives of 32 people and left hundreds injured.
In response, Turkey has launched a series of airstrikes against suspected Islamic State (IS) and PKK targets across the border in Syria and northern Iraq.
Parallel to the aerial campaign, Turkish police has carried out massive raids on suspected militants, which has resulted in the arrest of more than 1300 people across the country.
