Bulgarian police have detained two men suspected of attaching skimming devices to ATMs at several seaside resort locations, local media reported on Tuesday.

The two men were detained when they were dismantling a skimming device from an ATM in Sunny Beach, a resort near the city of Burgas on the Black Sea coast.

A police search of the apartment in Sunny Beach in which the two were residing found 15 sets of skimming devices, a data recording device for magnetic stripe cards, fake bank cards and portable computers.

The two men are suspected of attaching skimmers to ATMs located in Sunny Beach as well as the seaside towns of Pomorie and Nessebar.

The skimming devices mimic true parts of ATMs - card readers and keypads - to which they are attached by means of glue or adhesive tape. When unsuspecting customers slide their cards through the fake card slot, the counterfeit reader scans and stores all the information recorded on the magnetic strip. Fake keypads are fitted over the true ones in order to capture PIN numbers.
