Migrants in Southern Serbia 'Receiving Adequate Help'

Equality Commissioner Brankica Jankovic visited Serbia's reception centre for migrants in the southern town of Presevo on Monday and said that refugees there had assured her that they were being not discriminated against in any way.

"As in the first visit, about two months ago, the situation regarding discrimination is completely identical - we have not had any complaints," Jankovic told the Tanjug news agency.

She said that none of the migrants she met had any intention of remaining in Serbia and they were all in transit to the EU and Scandinavian countries.

After around 7,000 more migrants entered southern Serbia from Macedonia at the weekend, the authorities have taken additional measures to deal with the ongoing crisis that has gripped both countries.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Serbian authorities set up another temporary migrant camp in the village of Miratovac near the country's border with Macedonia.

Visiting the new site on Sunday, Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic said that about 5,000 refugees were currently in the camp and the Presevo shelter.

Doctors from the military hospital in the city of Nis are also in Presevo to provide assistance to migrants and say they are seeing 70 to 100 patients daily.

Almost all the migrants from border with Macedonia leave for Belgrade on buses provided by the UN refugee agency UNHCR in order to continue their trip towards Hungary and other EU member countries.

Some of Belgrade's parks have been overwhelmed with refugees who lack even the most basic provisions for hygiene.

Because of that, an Info Centre for refugees in Belgrade was opened on Monday to provide information on where they can get basic help in the capital.
