Teen dies from TSS caused by a tampon (pics + vid)
Not many women read the fine print when it comes to tampon packaging so a mother whose teen died from sepsis after using tampons is on a campaign to teach tampon users to read the danger signs of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Young Jemma-Louise Roberts, aged 13, felt unwell while on family holiday. She was wrongly diagnosed with Norovirus, a winter vomiting bug.
Later, she was rushed to hospital, only to die of Toxic Shock Syndrome due to bacteria linked to using condoms. Her mother Diane Roberts, aged 45, is warning others of dangers in an effort to save lives and more heartbreak.
Early symptoms include high fever followed by flu-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Later, a rash across the body can cause fatal organ failure if left untreated.
A postmortem on young Jemma-Louise’s bodies indicated that her death may have been caused by tampon use. Friends and family raised over 33,000 pounds for Alder Hey Hospital where they girl died.
The girl’s mother told The Mirror: “My husband had never heard of TSS – if one dad reads this and his daughter falls ill, it could save her life.”
