Bulgaria Submits First Nomination for Global Teacher Prize

A Bulgarian nomination for the Global Teacher Prize, an annual USD 1 million award given to teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to the profession, will be submitted for the first time in 2015.

The Bulgarian nominee, Tanya Borisova, Director of the St. Cyril and St. Methodius elementary school in Sofia's Benkovski residential district, will be announced Monday on the occasion of World Teachers' Day, which will be celebrated in Bulgaria for the first time, according to reports of the BGNES news agency.

The application and nomination period opened in May 2015 and the closing date is October 10, 2015.

The winner will be announced at the Global Education and Skills Forum March 2016 in Dubai, according to the website of the awards.

Nancie Atwell, an English teacher from Maine in the United States, won the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize 2015.

She said she would use all of the prize money for her school, including for scholarships for talented students and for improving the school's library system.
