German MP Calls on Bulgarian Prosecutors to Investigate Death of Afghan Migrant
Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) MP, Dieter Dombrowski, has called on the Bulgarian prosecution to investigate the death of the Afghan migrant, which occurred near the country's border with Turkey last week.
In an interview for Berlin Brandenburg radio, Dombrowski did not accept as plausible the version of the Bulgarian interior ministry that the migrant died after being hit by a rebounded bullet fired by a border policeman.
The German MP called on the chief prosecutor's office to investigate the case under the same legal norms, which the German prosecution would have employed in case a German policeman had fired the lethal shot, private bTV stations quotes him as saying.
The first results from the ballistic reconstruction of the gun used by the border police officer Valkan Hambarliev are expected to come out on Thursday.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) also expressed concern about what they described as serious discrepancies between the testimonies of the refugees and the official version of the interior ministry.
Representatives of BHC have held conversations with half of the illegal immigrants who were detained at the time of the incident.
According to them, the refugees were detected by a group of four-five police officers rather than three as the interior ministry claims.
Upon starting to flee, they heard and saw that at least two of the policemen were shooting at them.
The immigrants firmly dismissed that they had resisted the orders of the policemen.
According to the interior ministry, the incident occurred after three border policemen detected the movement of a group of 54 illegal immigrants near the town of Sredets.
