Olympiacos-Panathinaikos footy match cancelled, and Alexandras Ave. turns into war zone (pics)
Panathinaikos hooligans entered the stadium following the cancelation of the derby with Olympiacos football team and lost control. Tear gas, light flares, chains could be seen hurling back and forth from the field as chairs and other items were unhinged from the stadium. The SWAT team entered trying to restore order.
By 9.30 p.m. the football field was empty but the violence continued into the streets outside as dumpsters were lit up and arm-to-arm combat followed.
Amid this crisis there is speculation as to whether the Panathinaikos manager Yiannis Alafouzos will resign, whereas the Olympiacos team is considering as to whether to take legal action following the injury of one of its players – Alfred Finnbogason – during the bouts of hooliganism that led to the cancelation of the game.
