110 Journalists Killed Worldwide in 2015 - Reporters Without Borders

According to the annual round-up of Reporters Without Borders released on Tuesday, a total of 110 journalists were killed in connection with their work or for unclear reasons in the course of 2015.

At least 67 of these journalists were killed while reporting or because of their work, with the circumstances or motives behind the murder of the remaining 43 remaining unclear.

Among this year's victims were 27 citizen-journalists and seven media workers.

France was one of the deadliest countries for journalists in 2015, ranking third after Iraq and Syria.

This was largely due to the attack on the office of the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly magazine in January, which claimed the lives of eight journalists.

This year, two thirds of the deaths occurred in countries "at peace", which reversed last year's trend when the same share were killed in war zones.

In addition to the murders, 153 journalists were detained, while 54 other were held hostages.

The total number of journalists killed in connection with their work since 2005 has risen to 787.

Reporters Without Borders condemned the failure to protect journalists and called for an adequate response to deal with the emergency.

Among the proposed measures is the appointment of special representative of the UN Secretary-General for the safety of journalists.
