U.S. scientists give Greece a lifesaving robot that rescues refugees

A group of U.S. scientists from the Texas A&M University have donated an EM.I.L.Y (Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard) robotic device to the Lesvos coast guard headquarters and the Greek Red Cross to assist their rescue work with refugees and migrants, according to an announcement on Friday.

Remote-controlled and able to reach speeds of up to 40 km an hour, the device can be used to help people at risk of drowning.

EMILY is battery operated and uses an impeller motor to travel through water. Once it has reached victims, it can act as a flotation device for up to 4-6 people holding onto side ropes or handles.
