Belgrade marks 72nd anniversary of WWII liberation

BELGRADE - Belgrade is especially proud to celebrate one of the most important events in our history, City Manager Goran Vesic said Thursday as the 72nd anniversary of Belgrade's liberation in WWII was marked with a memorial parade.

Congratulating everyone on the Liberation Day on behalf of the City Assembly, Vesic said and added that, 72 years ago today, Belgrade was liberated after 1,287 days of Nazi occupation.

"A big battle, in which nearly 3,000 People's Liberation Army fighters and 940 Red Army soldiers gave their lives so this city could enjoy its freedom, ended on this date", said Vesic.

Five checkpoints were placed along the route of the parade, with actors re-enacting some of the situations the army and people faced on October 20th 1944.

The event was attended by veterans, citizens and representatives of the city authorities.
