BBC Turkish correspondent Hatice Kamer detained in Turkey's southeast

BBC Turkish correspondent Hatice Kamer was detained in the Şirvan district of the southeastern province of Siirt on Nov. 26, becoming the latest journalist to be apprehended in Turkey.

Kamer went to Şirvan following the collapse of a copper mine that killed at least 11 miners and left five others missing, in order to meet with the relatives of the victims.

She was also a member of the board of the Southeast Journalists Association.

No justification was given for Kamer's detention.

A BBC Turkish journalist and colleague of Kamer, Murat Nişancıoğlu, said she was a very valuable correspondent and that she had been assigned to interview the relatives of the victims.

He also said he expected Kamer to be released as soon as possible.

Heavy rainfall is believed to have triggered a landslide that caused the collapse of the Madenköy copper mine late on Nov. 17.
