Romanian Victim of London Terror Attack Dies

A Romanian tourist who fell of Westminster bridge in London during Khalid Masood's Islamist terror attack has been confirmed dead, bringing the total number of victims of the attack to five.

Dramatic video footage showed Andreea Cristea, 31, tumbling from the bridge into the river Thames as Masood drove a vehicle at high speed up onto the bridge's crowded pavement as he headed towards parliament, where he was later shot dead having fatally stabbed a policeman.

Dan Mihalache, Romania's ambassador to Britain, confirmed that doctors had turned off her life support system on Thursday.

Cristea, from Constanța on the Black Sea coast, had sustained serious head injuries and had badly damaged lungs. In the days after the attack she underwent surgery to remove a blood clot from her brain but doctors were unable to save her.

Cristea was one of two foreigners killed in the attack. The other was American tourist Kurt Cochran, 54, who was in London celebrating his wedding anniversary.

Masood, 52, born Adrian Elms, of mixed English and African parentage, was a convert to Islam with a history of crime. Widely believed to have been a "lone wolf" terrorist, police have yet to establish whether he had any links to foreign terrorist groups.

The Thames is a highly dangerous river owing to the strong currents, and those who fall into it frequently perish. In the worst known case, 51 people died when the pleasure boat, the Marchioness, capsized in the middle of the river in 1989.

Royals including Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, joined survivors, police chiefs and London's mayor on Wednesday at a service of remembrance at London's Westminster Abbey.
