Tom Hardy Set to Star in Bosnia War Film

Variety magazine reported on Tuesday that UK actor Tom Hardy will produce and star in a film My War Gone By, I Miss It So, which is based on the 1999 memoirs of UK Bosnia war correspondent Anthony Loyd.

The book recounts how Loyd, a former British Army officer who had become a heroin addict, came to Bosnia in 1993 to become a war correspondent, swapping drugs for the adrenaline rush of covering the brutal conflict.

Through a series of stark descriptions of the horrors he saw in the country, the author tells how the war both appalled and fascinated him.

Loyd gradually came to see Serbian nationalists as the main aggressors in Bosnia, and the Muslims as the main victims. ''Gone was my wandering impartiality,'' he writes. ''I was for air strikes, for NATO intervention, for arming and training the Muslims. I believed something fundamental was at stake.''

The film is a brutal yet sensitive story which addresses both the nature of addiction and the experience of war.

"I was struck by Anthony's work and words, experiences, and for me his is an important voice and an important book," Hardy told Variety.

The film will be directed and produced by Gavin O'Connor and Scott LaStaiti.

"Anthony's memoir was love at first page — a portrait of war like I'd never read before," O'Connor told the magazine.

"An up-close-and-personal account of a heroin junkie reporting from the front lines of Bosnia — the bloodiest conflict Europe has witnessed since the Second World War — who uses the high of war to kick his drug habit. It's a book written with both fists. It's Anthony's 'Apocalypse Now.' I feel privileged and honored for the opportunity to bring the book to the movies," he added.
