More electronic ticket dispensers being installed in Athens

The Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) is installing additional electronic ticket dispensers at various metro and ISAP electric railway stations to meet a spike in demand for the new swipe cards that are replacing the small paper slips that need to be stamped.

According to OASA, more than 100,000 plastic transit cards with the commuter's photograph and details had been issued by Thursday and another 10,000 were in the mail, heading to travelers who opted not to wait in the long lines that have been forming at ticket booths over the past two weeks.

The high demand is being attributed to confusion regarding when the old paper tickets will be abolished.
