Serbia to open new EU chapters in December - report

Serbia will on December 11 open new chapters in its accession negotiations with the EU, Tanjug reported on Thursday.

This will happen during the inter-governmental conference, the agency said.

Tanjug's sources in Brussels said that consent of all 28 EU members is still awaited, and that whether two or three new chapters would be opened now depends on this.

Anonymous European Council sources said unofficially that there were "at least two countries" that are not satisfied with Serbia's progress in fulfilling its rule of law obligations, and that it was up to their political appraisal how many chapters will be opened in December.

In case two chapters are opened, it is expected they will be chapter 6 (company law) and 30 (external relations), while the third, that could wait for the next inter-governmental conference, is chapter 33 (financial and budgetary provisions).

Serbia has so far opened ten out of 35 chapters, with two temporarily closed.
