Passenger ferry breaks away from moorings in Piraeus

An operation was under way on Thursday morning to tow the Panagia Agiasou passenger ferry back to safety after it broke away from its moorings at Piraeus Port in gale-force winds overnight.

Winds were still strong in the areas, hampering the operation, though meteorologists have said that conditions will ease later in the day.

The strong winds, which reached speeds ranging from 7 to 9 Beaufort at sea, also caused problems in ferry sailings, with several departures cancelled on Thursday morning in different parts of the country.

Sailing was banned from the capital's ports of Lavrio and Rafina, meanwhile.

Travelers expecting to sail on Thursday are advised to call the port in advance in check on departures.
