Head of SCJU Neurosurgery Section Saceleanu awarded for discovering new osteosynthesis material

Doctor Vicentiu Saceleanu, the chief of the Neurosurgery Section of the County Emergency Clinical Hospital (SCJU) in Sibiu, was awarded again at the PRO INVENT International Research, Innovation and Inventions Salon in Cluj-Napoca, for discovering a new osteosynthesis material, designed for patients who need repair of cranium defects, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

The doctor from Sibiu was part of a team of inventors coordinated by deputy dean of the SIM Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest Iulian Antoniac.

"The results of teamwork led to the discovery of a new special material, precisely a new type of osteosynthesis material that was created for patients who require repair of defects of their braincases. With this invention called 'cranial implant with osteointegration structures and functional coatings,' the mentioned team won all the awards that were granted, namely: the great award of the Technical University of Cluj Napoca; the diploma of excellence and the gold medal with special mention; the diploma of excellence of the "King Mihai I of Romania" University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat in Timisoara; the special award and honorary diploma, as a sign of recognition and appreciation of scientific creativity and originality," the SCJU release informs.

With the same invention, the team of Doctor Vicentiu Saceleanu also won the gold medal at the 2018 Bangkok International Intellectual Property, Invention, Innovation and Technology Exposition - IPITEx 2018, which was held between 1 and 7 February.

"It's the merit of the entire team of inventors and I have been honored to be part of this team which, through this innovation, contributes to the development of the area of investigation and treatment of patients with skull problems," Dr Vicentiu Saceleanu stated.

The chief of the Neurosurgery Section of Sibiu SCJU also explained what the material is and what makes this type of material special.

"The cranial implant with osteointegration structures and functional coatings is a mesh bag structure made of titanium or biocompatible titanium alloys, made up of basal cells connected in rigid or flexible bridges, in a spiderweb-shaped geometry, adapted to the surface of the braincase, having functional coatings based on selenium and / or hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as osteointegration. The implant is designed to cover the cranial bone defect and provides its tight seal, it is biocompatible, it doesn't generate artifacts in Computer Tomography and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance scan, it resists various biomechanical demands and some functional demands, and it's easy to handle and apply. In addition, the rigid and flexural bridge alternating system allows the implant to be adapted to the patient's anatomy while retaining the mechanical strength characteristics," Saceleanu added.
