Bulgarian PM: Bosnia Could Face Political Paralysis
Borissov told media at the opening ceremony of the International Economy Fair in Mostar on Tuesday that Bosnia and Herzegovina's political system could become deadlocked if its Electoral Law is not amended ahead of this year's general election.
"What I have heard from the three sides [Bosniaks, Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Serbs] is that they will not reach a compromise and this could paralyse Bosnia permanently. That is my opinion," warned the visiting Bulgarian premier.
Bosnia is due to hold a general election in October 2018 amid fears that, without a new law, it may be impossible to establish a new House of Peoples, the upper chamber of parliament, either at the state level or in the country's Federation entity.
Bosnian Croats want election law amended to ensure that the numerically dominant Bosniaks cannot elect a Croat representative, but this would involve dividing the whole of the Federation entity into ethnically-based electoral units, which most Bosniaks reject.
US and EU officials have organised several meetings with political leaders, but so far no solution has been found.
