Speaker Dragnea, PM Dancila, ForMin Melescanu welcomed by Israel's President Rivlin

A Romanian delegation including the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Liviu Dragnea, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, on an official visit to Israel on Thursday was welcomed by Israel's President Reuven Rivlin.

"During the talks at the meeting, the traditional friendship ties between the two countries, reinforced during 70 years of uninterrupted diplomatic relations were mentioned. At the same time, the excellent current level of co-operation between Romania and Israel was highlighted," according to a statement released by the Romanian Government.

At the same time, the Romanian officials showed that deepening co-operation with Israel is a priority of Romania's and reiterated the desire to take new steps towards a strategic dimension of the Romanian-Israeli relationship.

According to the Government, the security state of play in the region featured prominently on the agenda, with a substantial exchange of views on the conflict in Syria, the developments in the Iranian nuclear file, the Persian Gulf situation and the fight against terrorism.

"The speaker of the Chamber of Deputies discussed fast-tracked internal consultations on the relocation of the Romanian Embassy to Jerusalem, with the president of Israel welcoming this decision. The Romanian prime minister informed Israel that her cabinet proposed the future ambassador of Romania to Israel, but the appointment decision rests with the president of Romania."

A special theme was highlighting the role of the Israeli community of Romanian ancestry in building the modern state of Israel, as well as in strengthening the relations between the two countries.
