Romania's EU Council presidency to pay more attention to energy sector

Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu attended the seventh edition of the Romanian Energy Day international conference in Brussels on Tuesday, where he said that the Romanian presidency of the Council of the European Union will pay more attention to the energy sector and will act towards achieving the objectives of the Energy Union.

According to a press statement released by the Foreign Ministry (MAE), Negrescu stressed the importance of adopting the Energy Union package, with the ultimate goal being to ensure affordable, safe and sustainable energy for both Europe and its citizens.

"Romania is fully committed to the common European effort to implement energy-related actions and has consistently supported measures to strengthen Europe's energy security, achieve long-term energy and climate change goals, and achieve an integrated and functional energy market. Romania is an important energy security provider in the region and has the potential to strengthen this role in the future, as the national energy sector has the resources and expertise needed to help strengthen Romania's position among the states the European Union member states," Negrescu is quoted as saying in the press statement.

Negrescu mentioned that Romania supports the need for the Energy Union to become an expression of solidarity over increased energy security, including during the country's first tenure as the six-month president of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019.

"The Romanian presidency of the Council of the European Union will pay more attention to the energy sector and will continue the efforts of previous presidencies in order to achieve the objectives of the Energy Union. Based on the need to focus policies on the needs of the citizens, the action under the Romanian tenure will reflect in an adequate way interconnectivity, since a modern and reliable infrastructure is essential to achieving an integrated energy market," said Negrescu.
