Bulgarian illustration for Children from the 20s and 30s
Gosho is a kid who smokes, drinks and has a sinister temper. He does not sound like a good example of imitation, but the generations before us grew up without a problem with this hero from the books of Pelin Velkov and Tsveti Ivanov, illustrated by the best artist for the purpose: the controversial Stoyan Venev.
The unborn girl of Ran Bosilek, Tsarkinja Swan of Pushkin, Tsar Shishko of Elin Pelin and more treasures of the children's literature of the 1920s and 1930s make people like Dechko Uzunov, Iliya Beshkov and Alexander Bozhinov also sharpen pencils and brushes. And this is just a short piece of the names and titles that curator Krasimir Iliev pulls from the collection of Tony Nikolov (along with copies of the magazines Firefly, Kids' Joy, Kids Life and Window) to show us what has excited the minds of children and artists in time between two great wars.
