Today is the Donald Trump Vladimir Putin Helsinki Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump will meet in Finland today for their first one-on-one summit. Relations between their two countries are at lows not seen since the Cold War, so the pair will have their work cut out to bring anything positive out of the meeting.

Putin talks up anti-hacking prowess

Vladimir Putin says Russian and other security services thwarted nearly 25 million cyberattacks linked to the World Cup, AP reports. Putin announced the foiled attacks after the final - and just before meeting Donald Trump, who is facing growing concerns about alleged Kremlin meddling and Russian cyberattacks on the US electoral system.

In remarks released today by the Kremlin, Putin said the attempted cyberattacks targeted "information infrastructure" linked to the World Cup, but did not elaborate.

He spoke at a meeting with representatives of 55 intelligence units from 34 countries who worked on securing the tournament.

He said that thanks to Russia's tight security there were no "serious incidents" and "people who came to our country really felt they were safe."

Putin's leadership has been marked by his strengthening of the country's security services.

Trump targets Obama

The President took to Twitter ahead of his meeting with Putin, showing where he thought blame lay in terms of frosty relations.

Meeting will go 'fine'

President Trump says his meeting with Mr Putin will go "fine." Trump made the brief prediction at a breakfast at Finland's presidential residence in Helsinki.

He was meeting with Finland's President Sauli Niinisto in the hours before his highly anticipated summit with Putin.
