Romania's ambassador to US, called for explanations

Romania's ambassador to the United States George Maior has been called for explanations at the main offices of the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) offices in Bucharest, according to a press statement released by MAE on Monday.

"We can assure our international partners that in Romania there is the necessary political will on the part of the Romanian government and the government coalition to guarantee the proper functioning of the rule of law, respecting fundamental rights and freedoms, developing a genuine democracy and combating harmful phenomena such as the phenomenon of corruption. Mr ambassador George Maior has taken a stance that was not approved at the level of the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the government and does not represent the position of the Foreign Ministry. A Romanian ambassador should make sure - under the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations that he or she always represent the interests of the Romanian state in the state where he or she is accredited. His role is to promote the national interest as it derives from the institutional consensus and to refrain from public statements likely to adversely affect the bilateral relations with other countries. Know that the ambassadors' action guidelines are agreed upon at the level of the institutions in Romania and any deviation will attract accountability, according to procedures in force. In this respect, Mr ambassador George Maior will be called for explanations at the MAE main offices," according to the MAE statement.

At a meeting of Romanian diplomacy, Maior said Rudolph Giuliani, a former mayor of New York, is a "sparkling" character, and the letter he sent to the Romanian president is "the expression of a lobby initiated by some forces that are interested in defending of some legally challenged characters in Romania."

"Mr. Giuliani is a sparkling and extremely combative character in the US, and I do not know if he is still Mr Trump's lawyer. Check that. In any case, the letter is the expression of lobbying by some forces that are interested in the defence of legally challenged people," Maior said, responding to a question about a letter sent by Giuliani to President Klaus Iohannis, the chairs of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament and Prime Minister Viorica Dancila.

As for the street protests of August 10, he said he did not notice any "more special" perception from the US Administration.

"I am trying to promote our strategic, security, economic, political interests in this dialogue. We've had no discussions about this. I have not notice any more special perceptions from the US Administration," said Maior.
