Senate's Popescu-Tariceanu: Maior can no longer represent Romania in US capital

George Maior can no longer represent Romania as ambassador in the United States' capital, Senate President Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said on Monday.

"I believe that in the context in which Romania's ambassador to the United States is getting involved in political games on the US political stage, sides with some to the detriment of others, he is making a big mistake and this is unacceptable on the part of an ambassador. Just as we expect accredited foreign ambassadors in Bucharest not to get involved in the internal political disputes, Romania's ambassador in Washington must do the same. Mr Maior has probably been left with sequelae from the time when he was the SRI [Romanian Intelligence Service, e.n.] head and was playing the political game and he could not help there as well. As far as I know, he will be convened tomorrow in the SRI Surveillance Committee, where he will have to provide explanations on this issue," Popescu-Tariceanu stated in Parliament.

Asked by journalists if recalling George Maior to the headquarters is required, Popescu-Tariceanu said: "As long as he enters these games and engages Romania, it seems to me that he can no longer represent Romania in the United States' capital, because it is unacceptable for an ambassador to rally to the adversaries of the president who represents nonetheless the legitimate power elected by the US citizens. These types of behaviour go beyond the rules of the diplomacy and they get sanctioned."

Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea announced that Prime Minister Viorica Dancila was asked on Saturday, at the meeting of PSD's parliamentary groups in Neptun, to start the procedure to recall to the country Romania's ambassador to the United States, George Maior.AGERPRES(RO - author: Catalina Matei, editor: Mihai Simionescu; EN - author: Simona Iacob, editor: Maria Voican)
