Bulgaria is at the Forefront of EU Cases and Mortality from Cervical Cancer

Bulgaria is at the forefront in Europe in cases and mortality of cervical cancer. According to the National Cancer Registry in 2014 and 2015, more than 1,000 women are diagnosed with this disease per year and deaths are 349 in 2014 and 381 in 2015.

This was announced by the manager of the Specialized Oncology Hospital Dr. Stefan Konstantinov on the occasion of the Week for the prevention of cervical cancer on January 23-25.

Cervical cancer mortality in Bulgaria has increased threefold - from 1.8 per 100,000 in 1980 to 5.7 per 100,000 in 2015.

Cervical cancer is ranked fourth in the percentage distribution of the most common malignancies in women in Bulgaria with 7.4% in 2014 and 7.1% in 2015. The highest incidence rate was observed in the 30-44 age group. The greatest is the incidence in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven, Burgas and Blagoevgrad.

Globally, cervical cancer ranks fourth in frequency and mortality. Data show that every year over 61,000 women in Europe are diagnosed with the disease and nearly 26,000 die from it.
