PM Dancila meets British Foreign Secretary Hunt; contribution of Romanian community living in UK underscored during talks

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila met on Friday with British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, context in which she underscored the special contribution of the Romanian community within the British society.

According to a Government release, the discussion highlighted the very good bilateral relations between Romania and the UK, based on the Strategic Partnership and the shared interest that underpins the cooperation between the two states.

"The two underscored the development of economic exchanges, marked by the positive trend of the commercial exchanges and the special contribution of the Romanian community within the British society. In this context, the Romanian Prime Minister reiterated the interest for expanding the bilateral cooperation, including in the sense of capitalising on the remarkable human potential which shapes the Romanian-British relation. Moreover, she expressed the satisfaction with the opening of the Bucharest office of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG)," the release says.

Furthermore, the quoted source mentions that also commended was the "excellent" collaboration in terms of security and defence, believed to be the fundamental pillar in promoting regional peace and prosperity, and in supporting transatlantic objectives.

The meeting also occasioned an exchange of view in respect to Brexit, context in which the Prime Minister underscored the importance of this European file, including in view of completing it during the Romanian Presidency at the EU Council.

"The Romanian Prime Minister highlighted the common responsibility of the European Union and the UK's to protect the rights of the European and British citizens, in the spirit of reciprocity, regardless of the outcome of the Brexit process. In this regard, she welcomed the assurances provided by the British Prime Minister on this topic and reiterated the Romanian Government's commitment to adopt all the necessary measures for protecting the rights of the British citizens residing in Romania," the release mentions.

At the same time, the necessity of reconfiguring the Romanian-British Strategic Partnership was agreed in light of the new realities generated by the redefinition of the relations between the UK and the EU, as well as by the development which took place at bilateral level since the last revision in 2011.

"The two officials voiced the interest in continuing the dialogue on strengthening and expanding the Romanian-British bilateral cooperation within a new comprehensive and ambitious Strategic Partnership," the release informs.
