Maja Brkan slated for nomination for EU’s General Court

Ljubljana – Following consultations with parliamentary deputy groups, President Borut Pahor announced on Thursday that he would nominate Maja Brkan for Slovenian judge on the General Court of the European Union. Extra consultations are however needed on candidates for the EU Court of Justice.

Brkan, an associate professor of EU law at the Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law, enjoys more than sufficient support in parliament, the president’s office said in a press release.

“The president has assessed that [Brkan] meets the demanding criteria for this post with her extensive expertise as well as experience, so he will nominate this candidate,” it added.

Brkan had also been singled out by the Judicial Council among the eight candidates who had responded to the call for applications.

The call had to be repeated because none of the two previous candidates put forward by Pahor managed to garner an absolute majority in a secret ballot in parliament.

Another appointment procedure for the second post on the court is also under way after the previous candidate, Klemen Podobnik of the Ljubljana Faculty of Law failed a test at the Brussels vetting committee.

The previous Slovenian candidate, Marko Pavliha, was rejected by the same committee in September last year.

Consultations on candidates for the EU Court of Justice will meanwhile continue as the president wants to gather sufficiently reliable support for one candidate from the deputy groups, the president’s office said.

The talks come after the Judicial Council unanimously endorsed Marko Ilešič, who has been representing Slovenia at the EU Court of Justice since 2004, for another term. The government, however, backed Anže Erbežnik and Verica Trstenjak.
