Film Preserves Memories of War Crimes in Bosnia’s Vlasenica

'Cases of Evil: Vlasenica', a 25-minute documentary telling the story of the crimes that were committed in the eastern Bosnian town during the 1992-95 war, is now available to watch online.

The film was produced by the Post-Conflict Research Center and PINCH Media for the Srebrenica Memorial Centre's video archive, with financial support from BIRN.

It examines the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia case against Dragan Nikolic, who was convicted of participating in the murders, rape and torture of Bosniak prisoners when he was in charge of the notorious Bosnian Serb-run Susica detention camp.

Through the stories of the victims, including survivors of sexual violence, the documentary aims to preserve memories of the crimes and to highlight the struggle for justice and recognition of the survivors and of those who have returned to Vlasenica after fleeing because of the war.

"The importance of this documentary is in its innovative use of both video and archival footage from the ICTY and real-life stories of victims and survivors. The documentary also includes exclusive documents from the ICTY archives related to the establishment of the Susica concentration camp that detained Muslim men, women and children as young as eight years old," said Velma Saric, founder and president of the Post-Conflict Research Center.

"'Cases of Evil: Vlasenica' aims to contribute to the dissemination of historical memory and to preserving the narratives of survivors and their heroic fight against impunity for perpetrators. This documentary is also the first project of the Srebrenica Memorial Centre's video archive," Saric added.
