Žan Košir wins Rogla snowboard World Cup event
Zreče – Slovenia’s veteran snowboarder Žan Košir won the Snowboard World Cup parallel giant slalom event on Rogla on Saturday only days after a disappointing performance by the home favourites at the World Championships at the same venue.
In the finals, the 36-year old beat Russia’s Andrey Sobolev, who won bronze at the Championships here on Monday.
Košir had already secured his third World Cup podium this season by besting Italian Edwin Coratti in the semi-final. Coratti was pipped to the third spot by Pole Oskar Kwiatkowski.
This the sixth career World Cup victory and the 21st podium for Košir. He has never won a Rogla event before, having placed second two times and third two times at the venue before.
“Finally. I didn’ expect it. I was disappointed after the World Championships and was lying on the sofa at home for a few days. It’s turned out once again that less is more,” Košir, a three-time Olympic medallist, was quoted as saying by the web portal of the public broadcaster rtvslo.si.
Another Slovenian skier to make it past the qualifying round, Tim Mastnak was out in the round of 16.
The women’s event was won by World Cup leader Ramona Hofmeister of Germany, who out-raced Russian Sofia Nadyrshina in the finals.
