Germany win team event in Planica, Geiger rounds off victory

Planica – Germany won the final team event of the Ski Jumping World Cup on the giant hill in Planica on Sunday ahead of Japan and Austria. Karl Geiger rounded off the victory by winning the individual event.

Pius Paschke, Markus Eisenbichler, Constantin Schmid and Karl Geiger secured 819.5 points with jumps of 218, 235.5, 212 and 220.5 metres for what was the first victory for Germany in 21 years.

They beat their Japanese rivals by 9.5 points and Austria by 30.6 points at what was a single-series event.

Geiger went on to win the individual event (459.3 points) ahead of Japan’s Ryoyu Kobayashi (452.4), who was in the lead after the first series. German Markus Eisenbichler placed third (447.9).

Geiger and Kobayashi split the victory in the overall World Cup ski flying rankings.

Slovenia were fourth in the team event, 3.4 points short of the podium, and Domen Prevc placed fourth in the individual event (442.5 points) as the best Slovenian jumper.

Bor Pavlovčič was third after the first series with a personal best of 249.5 meters, but finished 7th after making a mistake in the second to land at 218 metres (430.1 points).

Pavlovčič is fourth in the overall flying rankings and Domen Prevc is fifth.

Pavlovčič’s earlier personal best was in today’s team event, at 243 metres. Domen Prevc landed at 228.5 metres and Peter Prevc at 205 after making a mistake. Žiga Jelar made it to 204.5 metres.

Commenting on the fact that Slovenia failed to win a single team event this season, coach Robert Hrgota told TV Slovenija: “You mustn’t afford a mistake in a single season and we have.”

Slovenia placed 5th in the Nations’ Cup.

The finale of the 42nd Ski Jumping World Cup season in Planica was a success although it had to be held without spectators.

Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud had already secured the overall World Cup victory before the final tournament.
