Latvian president visiting Slovenia

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor will host his Latvian counterpart Egils Levits on an official visit on Tuesday and Wednesday, which will be an opportunity to mark the 30th anniversary of Slovenia-Latvia diplomatic relations. Levits will also be received by National Assembly Speaker Igor Zorčič.

Slovenian-Latvian relations are “good, friendly and problem-free”, Pahor’s office said as it announced the visit, which is aimed at strengthening the partnership of two like-minded EU member states.

Slovenia and Latvia are “natural partners in the EU and allies in NATO”, the office said.

The countries share European values, being committed to the rule of law, solidarity, multilateralism, human rights and the fight against climate change.

NATO cooperation will be another topic discussed, with Pahor’s office noting Slovenia has a military unit in NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence mission in Latvia.

Pahor will present Slovenia’s interest in intensifying economic cooperation with Latvia.

Bilateral trade in goods reached almost EUR 59 million in 2020, while smart technologies are seen as having the potential for more cooperation.

The Latvian delegation will thus visit the Jožef Štefan Institute in Ljubljana and the Centre for Space Technologies in Vitanje.

The presidents will also meet participants of the ongoing EU Youth Conference to discuss Europe’s future.
