The EU bans flights, panic over the worst strain of coronavirus

As a reminder, the World Health Organization will hold an emergency meeting today on the occasion of the appearance of a new strain of coronavirus.
However, some countries have already started canceling flights from that part of the world. According to world media, Italy has banned people coming from South Africa from entering Italy due to a new variant of coronavirus.
Italy was joined by Germany, Israel and the United Kingdom, which introduced the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region.
On the other hand, the authorities in the Republic of South Africa believe that European countries are too hasty when it comes to that decision.
Tulio de Oliveira, director of the Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation in South Africa, conveyed to WHO representatives his concerns regarding COVID variant B.1.1.529, which is feared to be the worst variant of COVID identified so far.

The @EU_Commission will propose, in close coordination with Member States, to activate the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region due to the variant of concern B.1.1.529.
