RTV Slovenija gets new ombudsman

Ljubljana – Marica Uršič Zupan, a journalist at the regional newspaper Primorske Novice and a lecturer, has been appointed ombudsman at public broadcaster RTV Slovenija, an office concerned with processing complaints by viewers and listeners.

Uršič Zupan was appointed for a five-year term as 14 councillors on the RTV Slovenija 27-strong programming council voted in favour of her bid on Monday.

She will succeed veteran journalist Ilinka Todorovski, who failed to receive enough votes for what would be her second term. Her term runs out on 17 January.

Six candidates applied for the job, but only three met all the criteria, apart from Uršič Zupan and Todorovski also Biserka Povše Tašić, who however withdrew.

Uršič Zupan believes her asset is not being burdened by RTV Slovenija as she comes from outside.

She believes this bodes well to put professionalism and the highest of ethical standards at the core of her new job.

In her bid, she highlighted independence, impartiality, confidentiality, credibility and accessibility as the values that will guide her in her work.
