Tina Vrščaj wins Blue Bird prize for novel for adults

Ljubljana – The Blue Bird Prize for the best novel for adults that has not yet been published goes to Tina Vrščaj for Na Klancu, which will be published by Cankarjeva Založba this year. The author will receive EUR 10,000.

Vrščaj’s novel, a story about family and love written in “numerous, more or less clear scenes” and “foremost in dynamic dialogues”, was picked by a jury as the best among 60 texts by 40 female and 20 male authors.

The book focuses on the relationship between Eva and Gregor, who live a rather secluded life with two girls, slowly learning that their fundamental values and attitude to the world differ, as Eva starts to cherish a life without modern technology and focus on environmental issues while also looking for a job to contribute to the family budget.

By cleverly intertwining intimate and social topics such as ecology, criticism of social media, and analysing gender relations and maternity, the novel gets to the core of problems of today’s society and mutual relations, the jury said.

At the same time, the text is very dynamic, dramatic and almost movie-like, it added.

Vrščaj is a writer, literary critic and translator. She has written two novels, two children’s stories and a collection of short stories.

She is the fourth winner of the Blue Bird Prize for the best novel for adults that has not yet been published, handed out by publisher Mladinska Knjiga.

The award was first introduced in 2012 and has been handed out biannually since 2016, alternatively for youth novel and for novel for adults. This year it was conferred for the seventh time.
