Slovenia finish 7th in Olympic mixed team parallel slalom

Beijing – Slovenia did not make it past the quarter-final of the mixed team parallel slalom on the last day of the Beijing Olympics, finishing 7th out of 15 teams overall after being eliminated by Austria, who went on to win gold.

Austria defeated Germany in the final and Norway took bronze after kicking Team US out of contention, leaving the skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin without a medal at the Games.

In the quarter-final of the event, which was delayed for a day due to strong winds, Austria beat Slovenia 3:1.

The only point for Team Slovenia in that heat was scored by Žan Kranjec, the Olympic silver giant slalom medallist, who beat Johannes Strolz, the Olympic champion in the Alpine combined and silver slalom medallist.

Starting first, the slalom specialist Andreja Slokar, who finished fifth in her discipline at the Games, skied out after making a mistake in the upper part of the course in the race with Katharina Truppe.

Miha Hrobat was upset by a strong gust of wind to concede to Stefan Brennsteiner, and Tina Robnik was beat by Katharina Liensberger by only four hundredths of a second.

Earlier, Slovenia defeated Canada 2:2 after pulling out the best time of the best pairing. In that match Ana Bucik appeared instead of Robnik, who had to skip some training sessions after spraining her shoulder in the giant-slalom event.

Slovenia’s points in the match against Canada were earned by Hrobat and Slokar, who beat Erik Read and Cassidy Grey, respectively. Kranjec and Bucik were bested by Trevor Philip and Erin Mielzynski.

“We had aimed for a good result. It didn’t work out, I myself had more difficulties than during the warm-up and didn’t meet my own or others’ expectations,” Kranjec commented.
