Pahor promises help to Moldova over Ukrainian refugee crisis

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor pledged full support to Moldova in its efforts to help Ukrainian refugees as he spoke to President Maia Sandu on the phone on Monday. Slovenia will examine ways to help Moldova, he said, expressing Slovenia’s support for Moldova’s European perspective.

According to a press release from Pahor’s office, the two presidents exchanged views on the developments in Ukraine and condemned Russian aggression.

They hailed the Russia-Ukraine talks on the Belarus border, hopeful for diplomacy to take over again and for the dispute to be resolved peacefully.

The Moldovan president brought Pahor up to date on the developments in her country. Moldova is facing uncertainties with regard to energy supplies and in particular a difficult humanitarian situation as tens of thousands Ukrainians have fled the war in the country into neighbouring Moldova. Sandu told Pahor Moldova was going to ask the EU for help.

Pahor thanked Sandu for the humaneness and courage displayed by the Moldovans at what is a difficult moment for Moldova as well.

According to the UN, more than half a million Ukrainians have fled to the neighbouring countries since Russia launched its invasion five days ago. More than half have moved to Poland and more than 36,000 to Moldova.
