Save Ukrainian Children rally calls for arms supply to Ukraine

Ljubljana – The only thing that can end the war in Ukraine and save Ukrainian children is supply of additional weapons to Ukraine, said participants of Tuesday’s rally in Ljubljana that was held as part of global protests under the banner #saveukrainianchildren. There were calls to boycott Russia and warnings about violations of children’s rights.

The rally, organised by the Ukrainian community in Slovenia in front of the Museum of Modern Art and numbering some 60 people, was aimed at raising awareness in the international community about the violations of human rights, and particularly children’s rights, in Ukraine.

The children there are not only victims of gunshots and bombs, but also of ill-treatment, psychological and sexual violence, deportations and enlistment in the Russian army under duress, warned the participants.

According to data by the Ukrainian Embassy in Ljubljana, some 260 children have died so far during the war in Ukraine, some 730 have been wounded, nearly 1,900 are missing, and more than 200,000 are said to have been deported to Russia.

The speakers at the rally shared their personal stories from the war and noted the alarming situation in Ukraine at large as people there are left without the basic necessities of life.

On 1 June, International Day for Protection of Children, UNICEF reported that more than five million children in Ukraine depend on humanitarian assistance, and the number is growing on a daily basis as the war continues.

In early April, the Council of Europe presented a new strategy for the protection of children’s rights in crisis and emergency situations. Just before the conference, six countries, including Slovenia, adopted a resolution on the consequences of the war on Ukrainian children.
