Minister notes unity in support for more ambitious green goals

Brussels – Following a meeting of the EU Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council, where more ambitious green energy and energy efficiency targets were endorsed, Infrastructure Minister Bojan Kumer noted on Monday that EU member states had shown a high degree of unity in approving the general approach for the two most important Fit for 55 directives.

After what was his first council session since taking office, Kumer said that the unity displayed today underlined the importance of endorsing the entire Fit for 55 legislative package.

He reckons that final approval will take place under the Czech EU presidency in the second half of this year.

At the meeting, European energy ministers endorsed an agreement on more ambitious green energy and energy efficiency targets.

The legislation, which will now be discussed in the European Parliament, includes the raising of the share of renewable energy from 32% to 40% by 2030. Moreover, the ministers also endorsed more ambitious targets and measures regarding individual areas.

The proposed targets are part of the Fit for 55 package, which aims to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050.

The EU also adopted today the gas storage regulation that had been proposed by the European Commission to strengthen energy security in Europe.

The final green light for this was given at the ministerial. Kumer said the discussion made it absolutely clear that this time the bloc really needed a coordinated, unified European approach.

During the meeting he highlighted three measures that he believes need to be taken as soon as possible: a coordinated approach regarding a single European platform for gas purchases, the drawing up of a plan for a coordinated response to energy crises, and the launch of a solidarity mechanism in case of crises.
