Teacher Injured in School Shooting in Bosnia, Former Pupil Arrested

A teacher has been shot and is undergoing medical treatment after a 13-year-old opened fire in an elementary school in Lukavac in northeast Bosnia on Wednesday morning.

"The suspect is a child who is not yet 14 years old (born in late June 2009). The child is being held at Lukavac Police Department," Admir Arnautovic, Tuzla Canton Prosecutor's Office's spokesperson, told the media.

"After firing multiple shots towards the teacher and shooting him with one shot, the child discarded the pistol, which will be subject to forensic examination," Arnautovic added.

The government of Tuzla Canton, one of ten in Bosnia's Federation entity, has ended the school year in all elementary and high schools under its jurisdiction.

Tuzla Canton's minister of education, Ahmed Omerovic, confirmed that the minor was a former pupil of the school.

"The child was transferred to another school as a disciplinary measure since the second semester. As of today, classes in all schools in the TK area are concluding," Omerovic said.

Tuzla University Clinical Centre confirmed that "one patient has been admitted to hospital with critical injuries and it is undergoing surgery".

According to media reports, the minor threatened retaliation after he was transferred to another school. Authorities added that, due to the need to protect the child, they cannot give more information as yet.

The shooting happened only a month-and-a-half after a mass shooting in neighbouring Serbia, which left ten dead and six injured. A minor, born in 2009, was arrested.
