Türkiye proposes a new plan for Middle East peace

Türkiye has proposed the plan for a guarantor mechanism, which will safeguard the peace and deter violations by both sides, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated at the United Nations Security Council in New York, while criticizing the council's failure to fulfill its responsibilities for peace.

"Once again, all institutions have fallen short of their obligations with regard to international peace and security, especially Security Council. They are incapable of requesting a meaningful ceasefire with a unified voice," Fidan said during his speech in New York, further stating that the council's credibility would be further eroded if it were unable to provide even a remote future perspective that could resolve the issue within the confines of a two-state solution.

"We are doomed to navigate uncharted waters in the absence of international law and a moral compass. Failure to address this issue expeditiously will result in the resurgence of radical ideologies that are fueled by impunity and injustice," he said.

Fidan stated that despite limitations on freedom of speech, millions of people worldwide have united in support of Palestine and in pursuit of peace and further emphasized that people anticipate the Security Council to guarantee a ceasefire, resulting in the cessation of overt hostilities and unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza.

"The extension of the humanitarian pause in Gaza, as well as the exchange of hostages and prisoners, brings a glimmer of hope. It is crucial that we seize this moment as an opportunity to effectively tackle the underlying causes of this conflict," Fidan stated.
