Crete: 288 years prison sentence & a €4 million fine for two Egyptian migrant smugglers
Sentence of imprisonment of 288 years, with a fine of more than 4 million euros, has been imposed on two young Egyptian men found guilty of trafficking 40 illegal immigrants south of Gavdos in a dinghy.
Specifically, a sentence of 15 years in prison, plus 7 years for each of the 39 illegal immigrants that were transported was ordered.
Similarly, as regards the fine, 200,000 euros, plus 100,000 euros for each of the 39 illegal immigrants was imposed.
The decision was issued by the Single Court of Appeal of the Eastern Crete Criminal Court against the two Egyptians, 31 and 26 years old, who were arrested as smugglers in January. Among with the passengers were five minors.
For the rescue of the migrants, a large operation had been set up and finally, with the assistance of the Hellenic Coast Guard, they came out safely, with the Central Port Authority conducting the preliminary investigation of the case.
