Ministry of Education: 10,000 new permanent appointments at all levels of school education

The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance jointly announced 10,000 new permanent appointments of all specialties at all levels of school education before the start of the 2024-2025 school year, in the context of upgrading the quality of public education and strengthening inclusive education.

According to the announcement, the 10,000 new permanent appointments from the final lists of the ASEP are structured as follows:

Α) 4,451 positions to be filled based on the one-hire-for-one-leave budget rule (4,050 departures of permanent teachers and Special Education and Special Support Staff members after the end of the 2023-2024 school year, and 401 existing vacancies due to departures of permanent teaching staff during the 2022-2023 school year).

B) 5,549 additional positions, as a study of the data indicates a need to fill vacancies. The total cost of covering the new positions, amounting to 110 million euros, will be covered exclusively by national resources that have so far been allocated for the recruitment of substitutes.

The appointments will be carried out with emphasis:

– In education, where more than four times as many posts in primary and secondary education and eight times as many posts for Special Education and Special Support Staff in all specialties will be filled compared to the previous year, given that the previous year’s appointments were exclusively for psychologists and social workers,
– In the specialties of primary education, since five times as many teachers are placed in existing and newly created positions in specialties as compared to last year, while the total number of appointments in primary education will exceed 2,800.
– In meeting the needs of secondary education, where more than 5,000 recruitments will be made in all specialties.

The exact number of appointments per specialty will be determined in the near future, before the start of the new school year.

Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Kyriacos Pierrakakis said: “Investing in public education is the most profitable investment a modern state can make. Our country has no time to waste and must make reform cuts as soon as possible. We have a duty to provide our children with the highest possible quality of public education, while we owe teachers, the backbone of our education system, a stable working environment where they can develop and carry out their profession without delay. In collaboration with the Ministries of Interior and National Economy & Finance, we have created the space to make the highest number of permanent appointments in recent years and we pledge to continue to do so with all our efforts.”

For his part, Home Affairs Minister Thodoros Livanios said: “Public Education is a top priority for the Government. Supporting our schools by appointing permanent teachers is the necessary condition and an obvious step to provide better educational conditions for students of all levels, but at the same time, teachers should be able to devote themselves to their teaching work.”

Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis stressed: “The announcement of 10,000 appointments in education proves in practice the importance that the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis attaches to the strengthening of public education. We continue to rigorously implement all our commitments to our fellow citizens, especially to teachers, families, the new generation, young people and young people who are the future of the country.”
