Peru: After 22 years, the body of a climber lost in the Andes is found

The mummified remains of a US climber who was lost 22 years ago in Peru have been found again when the ice melted in a glacier.

William Stampfl had gone missing in June 2002, aged 59, when a snowpack covered the tents of his team climbing Mount Huascaran, which is the highest in Peru.

The body was identified thanks to the passport he had on him. His clothes were still in good condition and he was found wearing his boots and rope.

Stampfl had started the climb of Juaraskan with two other people. All three of them were killed in the avalanche, but only one body, apart from Stampfl’s, has been found.

There has been an increase in the discoveries of remains of missing hikers, climbers and skiers as glaciers increasingly melt worldwide. 

In recent months two other bodies of climbers have been found in Peru, an Italian who perished in June and an Israeli in May.
