Weather: Heat reaching 40s and meltemi winds persist – In which areas there is a very high fire risk

The high temperatures that began Monday will continue through at least the weekend with the thermometer topping 40 degrees Celsius. A feature of the next few days, as reported by meteo, will be that the maximum daily temperature will exceed 38-40°C daily in many parts of our country, reaching levels 6-8°C above normal for the season.

The high temperatures today will also be accompanied by wind which increases the risk of fire.

According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, today a very high fire risk (risk category 4) is predicted in Attica and 15 other regions.

In particular, a very high fire risk 4 is forecast for the following areas:

In Attica & Kythira, Boeotia, Euboea, Corinthia, Argolida & Laconia, in areas of Fthiotida, Fokida, Achaia, Ilia, Arcadia & Messinia, as well as Lesvos, Chios & Psara

High risk 3 in several areas.

From Friday onwards, the heat will be more noticeable as the winds weaken in many eastern regions and are limited to the Eastern Aegean, the Eastern Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese, according to EMY director Thodoris Kolydas.

The weather today

A few clouds are expected throughout the country, which will increase during the warmer hours of the day, mainly in the western, central and northern mainland.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 16 to 36 degrees, in the rest of northern Greece from 18 to 37-40 and possibly locally 41 degrees, in Thessaly from 20 to 38-40, in Epirus from 23 to 37-39 degrees, in the rest of the continental parts from 23 to 38-40 degrees and locally 41-42 degrees, in the Ionian Islands from 23 to 37-39 degrees Celsius, in the East Aegean islands from 24 to 38-41 degrees Celsius, in Crete and the Cyclades from 24 to 33-35 degrees Celsius and in the other Aegean islands from 24 to 36-38 degrees Celsius.

The winds will blow from the north in the Aegean with intensities up to 6 Beaufort and in the Ionian Sea north-northwest with intensities up to 5 Beaufort.

FORECAST FOR TOMORROW THURSDAY THURSDAY 11-07-2024
Generally clear weather. In the early morning hours there will be partly cloudy skies in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. In the midday hours local clouds will develop in the rest of the continent, so local rain is possible in the mountains of Macedonia.
Winds will blow from the north at 4 to 6 Beaufort and occasionally in the Aegean up to 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly and will remain high in several areas of the mainland. It will reach 36 to 38 degrees Celsius in the mainland and in some places 39 to 40 degrees Celsius. It should be noted that in coastal areas the maximum values will be 2 to 4 degrees lower.
In the island country the temperature will reach 31 to 34 degrees Celsius and in some places on the Ionian Islands, the eastern Aegean and southern Crete, 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.

FORECAST FOR FRIDAY 12-07-2024
The weather will be generally clear. In the midday and afternoon hours clouds will develop on the mainland, so in the mountains local rainfall is possible.
Winds will blow in the west variable 2 to 4 Beaufort, in the east from the north 3 to 5 and locally in the Aegean Sea 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly mainly in the west and north and will be high in several areas of the mainland. It will reach 37 to 39 degrees Celsius in the mainland and in some places 40 and possibly 41 degrees Celsius. It should be noted that in coastal areas the maximum values will be 2 to 4 degrees lower.
In the island country the temperature will reach 31 to 34 degrees Celsius and in some places on the Ionian and eastern Aegean islands 35 to 38 degrees Celsius.

FORECAST FOR SATURDAY 13-07-2024
Generally clear weather. In the midday and afternoon hours on the mainland local clouds will develop. Winds will blow in the west west west-northwest 2 to 4 Beaufort, in the east from the north 3 to 5 Beaufort and in the Aegean Sea locally up to 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly mainly in the west and north and will be very high.

FORECAST FOR SUNDAY 14-07-2024
Generally clear weather. During the midday and afternoon hours clouds will develop on the mainland, so local rain is possible, especially in the mountains.
Winds will blow west northwest 3 to 5 Beaufort, and in the Aegean Sea 4 to 6 and locally 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly further and will be very high.
