Xiao Junzheng: The Future of the Port of Piraeus Lies in Green, Digital, and Smart Development

Promoting the sustainable development of the traditional port sector through innovative ideas and the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature via digital, smart, and green transformation is a significant future direction for green development. In recent years, the Piraeus Port Authority has focused on green, digital, and smart development with low CO2 emissions, developing a healthy, environmentally friendly, and sustainable operating model, and implementing digital solutions to save energy, reduce emissions, and improve the safety and efficiency of port operations. These efforts contribute to the green and digital transformation of Greece.

A Green, Low-Emission, Environmentally Friendly Hub

The port implements policies and mechanisms that comply with European and international regulations. With the creation of an integrated system for quality, environmental, and energy management based on international standards, the PPA actively takes measures to prevent and reduce environmental impact through strict control of energy consumption and emissions, investments in photovoltaics, the design of shore power projects, and LNG refueling.

Energy savings and emission reductions extend across all pier operations. Aiming to identify, assess, and address potential energy risks, the PPA conducts annual reviews, monitoring energy consumption, evaluating the effectiveness of savings measures, and continuously improving energy efficiency. Compared to 2022, overall consumption in 2023 decreased by 7%, to 28,223 MWh, with emissions reduced by 9.75%. In line with Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan, an action plan is being developed for further emission reductions, including targeted measures and proposals.
