Lebanese media and Sky News Arabia report that Israel managed to hack the devices and cause their explosion.
There is currently no comment from Israel regarding the incident and the alleged cyberattack.
Dozens of Hezbollah members, including medical staff, are said to have been seriously injured in the incident, according to security sources cited by Reuters, while a Reuters journalist in Beirut saw 10 members of the organization bleeding. Meanwhile, according to sources from Iran, the ambassador of Tehran to Lebanon is also among the injured.
Similar explosions with several injuries occurred after the initial incident in Beirut in other areas of southern Lebanon, according to security sources cited by Reuters and Arabic media. Both Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera reported that the explosions took place in Mount Lebanon and the southern part of the country, with residents reporting they lasted about half an hour.
A Hezbollah official, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the detonation of the bomb detectors as the “biggest security breach” the organization has suffered in its nearly one-year war with Israel.
According to AFP, citing sources close to Hezbollah, dozens of members of the Iran-affiliated Lebanese organization were injured by simultaneous explosions of their bomb detectors in various strongholds of the organization.
A source close to Hezbollah told AFP it was “Israeli sabotage.”
“Dozens of Hezbollah members were injured in the southern suburbs of Beirut,” a stronghold of the Islamist organization, and “in southern Lebanon from the explosion of their bomb detectors,” said another source close to the party.
Hezbollah had previously asked its members to avoid using mobile phones to prevent Israeli sabotage. To this end, it had implemented a bomb detector system through which members are required to report to their units.
