Jazz in Jazz: The story of an authentic bar at the foot of Lycabettus

I still remember the first time I opened the heavy door of Jazz in Jazz in Kolonaki. I crossed the tiny lobby to find myself in front of a strange world filled with hundreds of small and large memorabilia hanging on the walls, musical instruments and hundreds of objects, memories of the travels of the initiator and creator of Jazz in Jazz , Kostas Spanos, a sailor by profession.

Kostas Spanos’ love for Jazz is great. And in his own bar, which he opened in 1977 in Agia Galini, Crete, Jazz had its place of honour. More than 10,000 vinyls, carefully selected from the early period of his favourite music, had found their place behind the bar, next to bottles of whisky. In 1995, Jazz in Jazz moved to its current location at number 4 Dinokratous Street, in Dexameni, Kolonaki. The records and a gramophone were moved with it, which is still fully functional today, along with 200 gramophone “plates”.

Behind the bar, nowadays, stands Vangelis Spanos, nephew of the owner and successor of this important legacy. Committed to serving the dual character of the shop with the same passion: Musical and anthropocentric at the same time, continuing to produce culture through musical moments and human stories, with the patina of time as an ally.
