Tatar says next UN Cyprus talks to include Türkiye, Greece

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar announced Tuesday that Türkiye and Greece would participate in the next meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the Cyprus issue.

The announcement came after an informal dinner at U.N. headquarters in New York, with Nikos Christodoulides, leader of the Greek Cypriot administration.

"We agreed that the next meeting with the U.N. Secretary-General will include the participation of Türkiye and Greece," Tatar said.

Tatar reaffirmed the TRNC's unwavering stance on a two-state solution, citing the failure of federal solution efforts over the past five decades.

He emphasized that formal negotiations would not resume until the TRNC's sovereign equality and international status are recognized.

Türkiye also advocates for a two-state solution based on sovereign equality and equal international status.

Tatar also mentioned a potential meeting with Christodoulides on Cyprus to discuss opening new border crossings, conditional on acceptable requests.

The Cyprus issue remains a key point of contention in the eastern Mediterranean, with the island divided since 1974.
